“We are grateful to our fellow citizens across the United States who have sheltered and saved the lives of tens of thousands of Ukrainian families. The Holy Bible calls us to “rescue those being led away to death” (Proverbs 24:11) – to care for the afflicted, and to provide refuge to the persecuted.”

With these words, the Council of Ukrainian Christian Churches of Washington State addressed U.S. President Donald Trump on March 7, 2025.

The Council sincerely believes that the United States will remain a haven for displaced Ukrainians, many of whom have nowhere to return due to ongoing hostilities, devastated cities, and Russia’s occupation of one-fifth of Ukraine. The U.S. economy will continue to grow thanks to the contributions of grateful and hardworking Ukrainians, who are responsible members of society and accustomed to diligent work.

The address from church leaders in Washington State was a response to media reports regarding the review of the legal status of Ukrainians and the U.S. President’s comments on the matter. On Thursday, Donald Trump stated that his administration is “certainly not looking to hurt” newly arrived Ukrainians.

“We appreciate your willingness to protect Ukrainians who have suffered from this years-long war and have found sanctuary in the United States. Many Ukrainian families have miraculously escaped the war and found refuge in the U.S. thanks to the mercy of the American people. Throughout history, since its founding, the United States has been a safe harbor for the persecuted, victims of war, and those seeking a safe place,” the Council of Churches stated in its appeal.

Religious leaders also emphasized that over the past three years, Ukrainian families have actively integrated into American society, securing legal employment, starting businesses, and paying taxes for the benefit of the United States.

“On behalf of our church members, we appeal to you, Mr. President, to preserve Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and continue the Ukrainian Humanitarian Parole program (UHP Re-Parole) for those who have escaped to the U.S. from the brutal hostilities in Ukraine.”

The appeal to the U.S. President was signed by Pastor Oleksandr Savchuk, Chair of the Council of Ukrainian Christian Churches of Washington State, along with 14 other church leaders. These churches unite believers of various denominations in Washington State, including Pentecostals, Baptists, Orthodox, Greek Catholics, and others.
